Welcome, my professional introverts and others curious about us, to edition #2 of For Professional Introverts, my LinkedIn pulse/newsletter for Professional Introverts.
Wait! Introversion and Shyness aren't the same?
No, and that's what we will discuss in this edition today.
Both are distinct and you can differentiate between them below:
Introvert
Introverts recharge by spending time alone or in small groups.
Introverts enjoy deep and meaningful conversations.
However, they usually prefer fewer social interactions than most.
Loud environments or large gatherings can get overwhelming.
Introverts often enjoy introspection and solitary activities.
Shy
Shy people have an innate fear of being judged or negatively perceived.
They may feel anxious or uncomfortable in social situations.
Shyness can lead to avoiding social interactions or specific situations.
The primary difference
While introverts might prefer solitude, it's not driven by fear of judgment or social anxiety. Shy people, on the other hand, often avoid social interactions due to these factors.
To determine if you're an introvert or shy, consider these questions:
Do you enjoy spending time alone and find it rejuvenating?
Do you prefer deep, meaningful conversations over small talk?
Do you feel overwhelmed in large crowds or loud environments?
Do you worry about being judged or negatively perceived by others?
Do you avoid social situations due to fear or anxiety?
If you predominantly identify with introverted traits, you are likely an introvert.
However, it's important to note that some people can be introverted and shy.
There's no right or wrong personality type.
Introversion and shyness are valid and natural traits. Understanding yourself can help you embrace your unique qualities and build healthier relationships.
That said, it is imperative to share that shy people can find improvement with therapy, social skills training, and exposure therapy involving an expert.
Thanks for reading.
More on the way.
